Totara House

The 1930s bungalow has undergone many renovations in its life, transforming the house from a small single level abode to a large, fragmented dwelling. Recognizing this, the client approached UA Studio to provide a holistic vison for the house and garden.

Existing period features are proposed to be retained and enhanced, whilst juxtaposed against modern insertions to create a contemporary new home that references the past.

At the core of the challenge was to open up the centre of the house to daylight. This is achieved through the insertion of a new spiral staircase with overhead sky lights providing filtered light through to the heart of the home, a quality of dappled light akin to that of the adjacent Riccarton Bush.
